Obscure Compilations

Seems there are a couple of obscure CDs out there with Mark Eitzel contributions that I had never heard of before. First is "Dopamine" by Mitchell Froom. Mark contributes the track "Watery Eyes". Second is something called "One Act Plays" by Sonny Smith. I can't find much trace of it on the net anywhere but he is a fellow performer from San Francisco and chums with Mark. Supposedly it is 10 one act plays written for his friends in the form of songs.

Never heard of that Sonny Smith album (and can't find it anywhere either)! A few other interesting ones - the 'You Can Never Go Fast Enough' tribute album which features Eitzel and Marc Capelle; Connie Champagne's 'La Strada' album, which features an otherwise unrecorded Eitzel song, What Do I Do (a little gem actually); the spoof 'Clubbo Sampler vol 1' which features Mark as lost 70s folk act Devon Shire; 'The Shanti Project vol 2' comp featuring his duet with Paula Frazer on Scott Walker's Rhymes of Goodbye. You probably know about all these, Shaun - if not and you need to hear them, shout :-)

Also meant to mention Virgil Shaw's 'Still Falling' album, which features a just-about-detectable Eitzel on three songs; although, if memory serves, he's credited on one of them for something like 'laughter'.

Thanks for that, thats quite a list. I have heard of a few of those but doubt if I ever actually heard any of them. I might do a post with a more complete list (with links) some time.

From http://www.myspace.com/sonnysmithband

"the third record one act plays, each song in the form of a play with smith singing narration and guest singers playing various parts. of the few records that exist in this kind of tradition (lou reed's and joe jackson's) those are both pieces of shit but smith manages to match the imagery of terry allen's juarez. guests appear throughout from rico bell of the mekons, andy cabic of vetiver, jolie holland, miranda july, neko case, virgil shaw, mark eitzel, akire and eugene chen, edith frost and a few more."

there are tons you're missing. a lot never saw the light of day though. ones that did include the shallows ep and danny pearson's solo record. others include the jane wiedlin sessions, the song he co-wrote with kacy crowley.. the list is very long.
